Our dedicated and valued volunteer team supports activities across the Museum from sharing our story with visitors, helping look after our collection, conservation cleaning, facilitating craft activities, helping at events, and much more!
We have a variety of roles available within the Museum and welcome applications from potential volunteers who wish to help support us. This is an exciting opportunity to join a friendly and fun organisation, be part of Lichfield’s history, and play a key role in delivering an excellent experience for our visitors.

How do I get started?
Have a look at the available volunteer vacancies listed and see which role best suits your skills, interests, and aspirations. Once you have identified a role that you’d like to apply for, please complete the relevant volunteer application form and return it to sjmuseum@lichfield.gov.uk
How frequently do I have to volunteer?
We appreciate that our volunteers are offering their free time and have commitments outside of the Museum, so all we ask is that you volunteer at least once a month. If a volunteer role requires more of your time we will include that information within the role description.
Do I have to wear a uniform or costume?
No, we do not ask volunteers to wear a uniform. We do ask our volunteers to wear smart, comfortable clothes, and we provide a volunteer lanyard and name badge.
There are multiple roles which do not require volunteers to wear historic costume. If a role does require you to wear historic costume, we include that information within the role description.
Will I receive training and support?
We provide inductions, training, and support for all our volunteer roles. We enjoy being part of your journey and seeing you share your talents, learn new things, develop your skills, and gain hands-on experience in the museum and heritage sector.
Do I have to be a Samuel Johnson expert?
No, you do not have to have any prior knowledge of Samuel Johnson. You will learn more as you volunteer at the Museum.
Will I make friends and meet new people?
You will meet likeminded people and make new friends in a warm, friendly, and welcoming atmosphere.
How old do I have to be to volunteer with you?
Please note that you must be at least 18 years old to volunteer.
Will I need to provide a reference?
Yes, it is our policy to ask new volunteers to provide a professional reference, however, please do get in touch if you would struggle to provide one, and alternative options will be considered.
When will you respond to my application?
We are a small team who carefully considers each volunteer application so please don’t worry if we don’t respond straight away, we will get back to you in due course.
